Can I Make Money Blogging on WordPress?

You’ve probably heard of numerous bloggers that claim to earn a living through it. Yet, how do they do it? You’ve been at it for almost two years and you still have nothing to show for it. So, what gives? Can I make money blogging on WordPress?

If you’re blogging on the WordPress platform, it is possible to make money from it. It is, however; important to note that blogging is not a get rich quick scheme. It requires time, effort and research; if you are willing to put in the work, you’ll get there.

Notably, according to W3techs, WordPress is the dominant Content Management System on earth. They continue to state that this platform supported 25% of the web in the year 2015. WordPress currently powers 30% of the web, which is a 5% increase since 2015.

Every year, the platform grows at an insurmountable rate, thanks to its effectiveness. So, if you are looking to start making money through blogging, WordPress is the way to go.

First things first, there are two variations of WordPress to choose from. They include:

  • WordPress.com: This platform is perfect for bloggers who are just starting out. Not only is the platform free, but it is very easy to set up and launch your website on it. It is very limited, however; you can still earn money through.
  • WordPress.org: With this platform, you can have your own server to host your website on. Due to its lack of limitations, it is perfect for those looking to make money through blogging.

That said, below are a few top tips to make money through blogging on WordPress.

Sell Sponsored Posts

If your blog is well-established and well-known, you can easily sell sponsored posts to those interested. Sponsored posts can be defined as content written for the specific reason of promoting and adverting a certain service or product. You get paid for writing a sponsored post by the company that you’re promoting.

You can either get approached by an interested company, or you can reach out to advertisers. The effective way of reaching out is by creating a page call advertisement. Please avoid linking to illegal sites or using third party advertisements.

Make Money With Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is a credible and effective way to monetize your blog in a short time. The blogger recommends certain products or services through tracking links on his/her website. One way to monetize it: Every time a person clicks on your link and buys the product, you get a commission.

To get started, do your research on the type of products/companies you would like to get involved with. Also, be sure to research on the reputable affiliate programs that you’d like to join. My #1 recommended Affiliate program is Wealthy Affiliate – I recommend you read my review and make up your own mind 🙂

Google Adsense

By using Google Adsense, you can display Cost Per Click ads. Cost Per Click ads allows the blogger to earn money every time a person clicks on the ad on his/her website.

To get started, you’ll need to get signed up with Google Adsense and create a script. Copy and add this script to your website so that advertisements can be displayed.

Sell Ads Directly

Selling ads directly could allow you to make more money as compared to using Google Adsense. With Google Adsense, you get paid every time a visitor clicks on the ad.

However, when selling ads directly, you have to negotiate the prices with advertisers. Also, you have to see to the administrative work of selling the ads.

Thankfully, WordPress comes with a number of helpful plugins that can make selling ads easier. Plugins such as BuySellAds can help you connect to advertisers faster.

Get Paid To Write A Review

This method is a lot similar to selling sponsored posts. However, this method requires that you use the product or service before reviewing it.

Surprisingly often, you’ll get free products from companies that would like a review. This products or services are primarily related to your niche or your website. Of course, you get paid for writing the review.

If companies haven’t approached you yet, why not trying reaching out to them first? Do your research first on reputable companies that are related to your niche before reaching out.

I’m hoping that you found some value in these tips. Personally, I’ve been doing affiliate marketing for the last 5 years – getting recurring revenue from my WordPress site – so it’s certainly possible for every Joe and Jane out there.

Please let me know any feedback or questions you have – would love to hear from you!

  1. Hi Karina,

Awesome article! I really enjoyed the reading!

I knew some ways to make money blogging on WP but I didn’t know about the sponsored reviews. How well a site needs to be established to start with sponsored posts? Can we do this with all niches? This really interest me and I really would like to start with this option as soon as possible:)

Thank you very much for this useful post!

  2. Hi Karina,

    You constantly make great post.

One thing I really like is that you tell it how it is.

No hype and bloated promises and you offer real solutions.

Blogging can be a lonely place to be and bloggers certainly need all the help they can get and you advice is gold for many people.

I started many years ago with Google Adsense. It’s basically an ad-revenue share program that does allow the blogger to earn money quite easily.

I probably would not recommend it for someone who really wants to sell their own products, but it really is a great place to start.

It can be very refreshing to see a dollar or two coming in.

It’s great to see you helping!

    Keep up the excellent work

  4. It is nice to see a recommendation that beginners try blogging using one of the WordPress platforms. Sometimes I find it annoying to see recommendations for beginners to sign up for low-cost hosting to create their own websites/blogs. Many of the low-cost hosting solutions have expensive renewal costs. I don’t think it really matters where a blog is hosted. Because more than one guru has said more time should be spent promoting content rather than developing content.

    1. Thanks for reading and taking the time to comment, Glen 🙂

And I agree with you in regards to the hosting environment. I manage 3 wordpress sites, all hosted on the Wealthy Affiliate platform. I write my content within this platform and can publish directly to my wordpress site(s) from WA.

      Have a super day!

  5. You can definitely make money through wordpress but as you said it is not a quick money scheme. As in real life building a business needs time, patience and a lot of work things in the online world function the same. If you go with the right mindset that what you are doing is a real business and invest the time needed as in a real company then the chances of success are bigger. Noone became successful overnight.

  6. Hi Karina – thanks for sharing this interesting article. I initially used WordPress a couple of years ago, but struggled with it to be honest. I have now started using it again to create my new online business, and once you get to grips with it, the features are so useful and actually easy to understand. I haven’t yet made any money from affiliate marketing, but I am enjoying the journey. All the best, Diane

    1. Hi Diane,

Mind you, whenever I’ve had questions or been unsure on how to do things, I have reached out to my fellow members on Wealthy Affiliate, or simply submitted a support ticket there and received the required support in no time. 🙂

      Have a super day!

      cheers
      Karina
